Many indeed. Often, I’m faced with doubts, questioning if I can do this or contemplating whether an alternative path might be easier.
What warning signs indicate to you that you might be feeling stressed or overwhelmed?
I experience a lack of concentration, become very short with people, and negative beliefs start to creep back in.
Could you share an instance when your mental health impacted your business and how you navigated through that?
Early in my business journey, after losing a few clients and having only £58 in my bank account, I felt like I was on the brink of failure. However, I committed to giving it my all for 30 days, adopting daily meditation and seeking inspiration from books. This renewed focus enabled me to sign three clients in just 14 days, setting a positive trajectory for my business.
Can you identify specific aspects of your role as a founder that have had a substantial impact, either positive or negative, on your well-being?
Factors impacting my well-being include nutrition, exercise, an accumulation of admin tasks, conversations with fellow founders, sleep, and support from loved ones.
Who are in your support system, and how do you engage with them during challenging times?
My support system comprises my wife, my advisor, entrepreneur friends, and a broader circle of friends and family.
Have you ever considered professional help to address mental health concerns during your founder journey? If so, how was that like?
I have considered it, but I’ve never pursued it.
What are some practical strategies you’ve implemented to maintain your mental health while managing your startup?
Among the strategies I’ve employed are starting the day with outdoor movement, daily hydration, prioritizing tasks, daily meditation, maintaining a weekly achievements diary, regular consultations with advisors or friends, consistent exercise, preparing for the next day in advance, seeking daily inspiration, and scheduling recreational activities outside the home.
How do you strive for a balance between your professional and personal life? Are there any particular boundaries or practices you’ve found helpful?
I use specific apps for personal interactions only, like keeping WhatsApp business-free. I have a daily cut-off time, and I make it a point to shut down my laptop and stow it away at the end of each workday.
If you could offer one piece of advice to fellow founders on managing well-being or stress, what would it be?
Your mindset and psychology are more critical than your skills or experience.
Are there any other aspects of your experience as a founder related to mental well-being that we didn’t ask about but you think are important to share?
Many founders are experiencing similar challenges, but they often present a different public image.
