Robin Waite, the driving force behind Fearless Business, shares his founder journey that began in 2004 during a pivotal moment at University. Navigating the complexities of entrepreneurship, Robin reveals the challenges, successes, and lessons learned over nearly two decades in business.
What inspired you to become a founder?
In 2004, during my final semester of University, my dissertation tutor unexpectedly returned to Brazil. This left me with the options of choosing a new topic or not completing the dissertation module. I opted to start my first business instead of redoing the dissertation.
During your time as a founder, have there been specific instances where you’ve felt particularly stressed or overwhelmed? If so, could you share a brief overview?
Yes, in my 19 years of business, I’ve encountered multiple stressful situations, ranging from staff management challenges, monthly cashflow anxieties, to handling difficult clients. Additionally, the arrival of my children changed my dynamic, reducing my available time and teaching me about patience.
What warning signs indicate to you that you might be feeling stressed or overwhelmed?
I tend to physically stop breathing, hold my breath, and become tense. Emotionally, I might feel incredibly sad, like life’s joy is being drained. I’ve had to learn to manage these feelings and ensure they don’t impede my work’s flow.
Could you share an instance when your mental health impacted your business and how you navigated through that?
Between 2004-2016, while running a creative marketing agency, I juggled the business with a home renovation project. By 2011, the combined pressures led to burnout, leaving me debilitated for weeks. A trip to Morocco and a change in perspective helped me recover.
Can you identify specific aspects of your role as a founder that have had a substantial impact, either positive or negative, on your well-being?
Being a thought leader, author, speaker, and coach means I have to consistently uphold authenticity and congruence. This has taught me to prioritize my well-being so that I can effectively serve others.
Who are in your support system, and how do you engage with them during challenging times?
I lean on coaches, therapists, audiobooks, my wife, and my daughters. Their support, understanding, and simple gestures, like a hug, are invaluable.
Have you ever considered professional help to address mental health concerns during your founder journey?
Yes, I’ve consistently sought therapy and coaching since 2008/09. Engaging with therapists, life coaches, and business coaches has been immensely beneficial.
What are some practical strategies you’ve implemented to maintain your mental health while managing your startup?
Prioritizing rest, finding joy and fulfillment, engaging in regular exercise, ceasing alcohol consumption, and allowing for downtime have been crucial. I also find solace in nature, such as by the sea, and make sure to take breaks when needed.
How do you strive for a balance between your professional and personal life? Are there any particular boundaries or practices you’ve found helpful?
Balancing work, especially from my home-based studio, with family life is challenging. I’ve learned to set boundaries, giving myself time to transition between roles, communicate openly with my wife about our schedules, and ensure we’re both aligned in our responsibilities.
If you could offer one piece of advice to fellow founders on managing well-being or stress, what would it be?
“Be kind to yourself.” Recognize that not every day will go as planned, and give yourself grace during the tough times. Find activities or habits that replenish you and prioritize them.
Are there any other aspects of your experience as a founder related to mental well-being that we didn’t ask about but you think are important to share?
Open communication about feelings and challenges with peers and mentors is crucial. Many founders believe they need to always appear strong, but sharing vulnerabilities can be therapeutic and foster deeper connections.
Do we have your permission to share your answers on our website?
I would suggest asking founders if they’re aware of the available resources for mental health and the initial steps they can take when feeling overwhelmed.

Yet, with a strong support system, self-awareness, and a commitment to self-care, he emphasizes the importance of resilience and the power of authenticity.
