Jaco Koenig, CTO at Doshi

In the entrepreneurial realm, the challenges are multifaceted and can be mentally taxing. Jacobo Koenig, the CTO of Doshi, offers an unfiltered look into the highs and lows of founding a venture. With a familial backdrop of entrepreneurship, he is no stranger to the allure of creative freedom. However, the journey is not without its share of challenges.

What inspired you to become a founder?
My family has always been entrepreneurial, and I enjoy the creative freedom of being a founder.

Have you felt overwhelmed or stressed during your time as a founder?
Of course, it happens all the time. Being a founder is one of the least rewarding things you can do. The rate of failure is high, and you’re battling against it. However, the victories are truly yours to enjoy, especially against the backdrop of so much pressure.

How does stress manifest for you?
Usually when I lack the motivation to work on things I know are priorities.

Were there times when mental well-being significantly impacted your business?
It happens often. I suffer from depression and have dealt with it for most of my professional life. I give myself space to be wrong and less productive. The feeling will pass, and I seek help from real friends and mentors.

How does being a founder impact your well-being, both positively and negatively?
Raising funds with VCs and trying to form relationships with them is very stressful. The team component, especially with good people, usually motivates and encourages me.

Who supports you during challenging times?
My childhood friends and a few mentors. They are always available, and I just need to communicate how I feel.

Have you sought professional mental health support?
Yes, I have mixed feelings about its effectiveness. I started recently with psychotherapy.

What strategies have you adopted to maintain your mental well-being?
Checklists, checklists, checklists.

How do you balance your professional and personal life?
It’s personal, and you need to negotiate it based on your circumstances. My family is my priority, which has helped me maintain a balance.

Any advice for fellow founders regarding managing well-being or stress?
Try to find people who have been through similar situations and ask for help. Don’t be embarrassed to share and be open.

Any additional comments or thoughts?
Some people need medication to start, especially if depression is seriously affecting life. With a trusted psychiatrist, analyze if this is for you. Also, specific thoughts drive anxiety.

Ending Remarks

Jacobo’s narrative paints a vivid picture of the founder’s journey: the persistent challenges, the mental toll, and the invaluable support systems that keep one grounded. With a unique blend of vulnerability and resilience, he underscores the importance of seeking help, valuing one’s well-being, and cherishing the small victories along the way. His story serves as a testament to the importance of mental health in the startup ecosystem and the need for ongoing dialogue and support.
