Journeying through the intricate world of startups, Irena, CEO of Tribd, opens up about her challenges, moments of self-doubt, and the learning curves she encountered. Her story underscores the duality of passion and pragmatism, capturing the essence of the entrepreneurial spirit while emphasizing the importance of mental well-being.
What inspired you to become a founder?
Personal experiences and solving a problem I encountered.
Have you ever felt overwhelmed as a founder? If so, can you describe the moments?
At the first stages of founding a company, during the early days trying to raise capital, and any time throughout the past five years, especially when spending own capital to sustain the business.
How do you recognize when you’re feeling overwhelmed or stressed?
Insomnia and anxiety.
How has your mental well-being impacted your business or decision-making?
Experiencing “founders fatigue”, inability to focus on the business. These days I prioritize my mental health and take breaks without feeling guilty. I also have a full-time job, so the business became a “side hustle”.
What are the challenges you face as a founder?
Dealing with most aspects of the business by myself and trying to solve most problems alone can be daunting. Sometimes I resent my own business because of that.
Who supports you during challenging times?
My co-founder. Occasionally others who are also founders have similar experiences I can relate to.
Have you sought professional mental health support?
Yes, but not related to my business.
What strategies have you adopted to maintain your well-being?
Take time off to unplug and recharge. Don’t bet on the business more than you are willing to absorb when things go wrong. Life is too short.
How do you balance your professional and personal life?
I surrender to what my body tells me. If I don’t feel like it, I just don’t work on the business until I feel like it again. My startup is not my full-time job and I am only accountable to myself.
Any advice for fellow founders regarding managing well-being or stress?
Prioritize yourself and your mental health. Only commit the amount of time, effort, or money that you’d be okay losing. Find a balance between passion and hard reality.
Any additional suggestions or thoughts for the future?
Maybe more specific questions about what causes more stress for the founders (financial reasons, investors, co-founders, lack of success, too much pressure, etc.).
